Cuff catches liquids! /Le rebord emprisonne les liquides

A translator’s work is never done. I was visiting a kitchen appliance store and chanced up some fancy rubber gloves, with a special cuff. 

 

The French ending sentence made me laugh. The cuff “imprisons” the liquids, it said.  Just like you imprison a burglar.

My research centered on the idea of cuff and spills. Looking on the French side, I looked up pant cuffs which gave me “revers de pantalon”.  Then I had to deal with the idea of spills – égouttement was the noun that appeared the best and “tremper” (to soak) gave the idea of wet hands, sleeves or arms). For the verb “catches” , I found attrapper,  then capter, which in construction, for example, refers to a device that catches (water).

Solution:   Plus de mains, de manches ou de bras trempés! Le revers retient les liquides!

On est traducteur pour toujours.  Lors d’une visite d’un magasin d’appareils ménagers, j’ai aperçu des gants portant un revers spécial. 

La traduction française me fit éclater de rire : « Le rebord emprisonne les liquides » ! Comme la police le fait pour les malfaiteurs.

J’ai donc effectué une recherche sur les mots cuff et spills. Pour le premier, les parties de l’habillement m’ont donné « revers de pantalon ». Pour le mot  spills, j’ai d’abord trouvé le substantif « égouttement », puis comme verbe le mot  « tremper » et comme adjectif – trempé.

Solution :  Plus de mains, de manches ou de bras trempés! Le revers retient  les liquides!

Solar LED Landscape Light

Needing a garden floodlight that would not require wiring, I went to our neighborhood Canadian Tire store and picked out just the item that I needed. While the features of the device met my requirements, the package copy shocked me by the half-assed approach to French.

The title was self-explanatory in English:

SOLAR

LED Landscape Light

Solar implied that no wiring was required and LED made reference to light emitting diodes which are very strong bulbs that require very little current. 

The French panel followed the same layout but in doing so created a nonsense. It said:

SOLAIRE

Lampe de jardin DEL

The correct sequence should have been:

Lampe solaire à diodes électroluminescentes pour le jardin or

Lampe solaire à DEL pour le jardin

You can see that the poor English-speaking graphic artist or copywriter would have been at a complete loss about placing the caps in the right order. Contrary to the English language, French shuns caps inside a sentence and does not allow capitalization for emphasis.

Not surprising that French-speaking buyers, especially in Québec, get absolutely livid when they encounter such packages. Obviously, no one at Canadian Tire bothered to double check the packaging. It is a shame because, when I managed the Marketing Translations department there in the 70’s and 80’s, a very strict protocol was in place to ensure that product packaging copy, created in-house or outside, was scrutinized for errors.

Ayant besoin d’un projecteur de jardin sans câblage, je suis passé au magazin Canadian Tire du coin et y ai trouvé l’article que je cherchais. C’était exactement ce que  je cherchais – c’est just que le texte français sur l’emballage ne m’a pas impressionné.

Le côté anglais disait ceci :

SOLAR

LED Landscape Light

Solar light – projecteur ou lampe solaire, qui marche au soleil. LED, sigle anglais de light emitting diode, dont l’équivalent français est DEL (diode électroluminescente). Les DEL sont très puissantes et consomment très peu d’énergie.

Le texte français était du charabia :

SOLAIRE

Lampe de jardin DEL

On aurait dû dire :

Lampe solaire à diodes électroluminescentes pour le jardin ou

Lampe solaire à DEL pour le jardin

Vous pouvez constater que le pauvre dessinateur graphiste ou rédacteur d’expression anglaise ne savait pas du tout où placer les majuscules. En français, les majuscules commencent une phrase et leur emploi sur un mot à l’intérieur d’une phrase est décommandé. On n’utilise pas les majuscules pour faire effet.

Pas étonnant que les acheteurs d’expression française, notamment les Québécois, se mettent absolument en boule en voyant ce genre d’emballage. Il est évident que personne, chez Canadian Tire, n’avait pris le soin de vérifier le texte.  C’est dommage, parce que, dans les années soixante-dix et quatre-vingt, lorsque j’y étais chargé du Service de traduction marketing, on avait mis sur pied un protocole rigoureux pour contrôler les emballages élaborés à l’interne et à l’externe.

Global replace does not translate! /Le remplacement global menace la traduction!

Many years ago, when the French speaking union workers at the former General Motors Ste-Thérèse assembly plant accepted a new contract, the new contract and its provisions were sent out for translation to one of GM’s “approved” translation companies.

Il y a de nombreuses années de cela, lorsque les ouvriers syndiqués de l’ancienne usine de montage de la General Motors à Ste-Thérèse avaient accepté un nouveau convention collective,  on expédia le texte et les stipulations à un des cabinets de traduction agréé par la GM.

The translation company notified me, as the Manager of Linguistic Services, when they finished the job and warned me that they cautioned the end-user against just inserting new words in the old contract instead of revising the whole copy.

Une fois le travail terminé, le cabinet me le fit savoir, à titre de directeur des services linguistiques, en précisant qu’il  avait averti le client ne pas tout simplement insérer les nouveaux mots dans le texte de l’ancienne convention sans en faire une relecture complète.

Next thing I hear is that the unionized workers almost started a riot when they found out that new expressions, words and some sentences had been inserted into the old contract without the final French being proofread or checked. They threatened to go on strike for being  given such garbage.

Soudain, on m’apprend que le syndicat avait presque provoqué une émeute lorsqu’il avait appris que les nouvelles expressions, mots et phrases avaient été insérés dans l’ancienne convention sans dernière vérification du texte intégral français. Une telle cochonnerie pouvait entraîner une grève.

That is when Human Resources decided to withdraw the document completely, have it destroyed and start from scratch. You can imagine the cost of man hours spent in redoing the job, reprinting it and redistributing it to the workers. Not to mention the lost goodwill that may have existed between workers and management.

C’est alors que le service des Ressources humaines dût procéder à un retrait complet de la convention, à sa destruction et à une nouvelle impression. Vous pouvez imaginer le coût de la main d’œuvre pour refaire se travail, le réimprimer et le distribuer de nouveau aux ouvriers. Sans parler de la perte des bonnes relations qui existaient auparavant entre les ouvriers et la direction.

It is obvious that a lot of coordination should have taken place to ensure that the job had been done right the first time.

Il est évident qu’une très sérieuse coordination aurait dû avoir pris place pour que le travail soit fait convenablement au préalable.

Modelling clay vs Pâte à modeler

I was recently reading a Christmas catalogue which had arrived in the mail and noticed a detailed description of some modeling clay.  Later on, I realized that a French version of the catalogue existed so I looked up how modeling clay had been rendered.

Un catalogue de Noel  en anglais  récemment arrivé contenait une annonce pour du modeling clay. M’étant rendu compte qu’Il existait également une version française, je l’ai consulté pour découvrir que la description du produit avait été traduite par « argile à modeler ».

Something is not right, I told myself while reading the French description. There is something that does not sound correct. I remember that as a child in Paris, we used to buy all kinds of pâte à  modeler (literally modeling paste).  So I went to my two primary sources – Terminum, the Canadian Governement Terminology bank, and the BTQ ‘s (Banque de terminologie du Québec) website GDT (Grand dictionnaire terminologique). Both gave pâte à modeler as the equivalent for modeling clay.

Un pressentiment bizarre m’envahit – il y a quelque chose qui cloche ici. Je me souvins alors de la pâte à modeler avec laquelle je jouais des heures entières  à Paris, lorsque j’étais enfant. Pas question d’argile. Une vérification dans Termium et à la BTQ me confirma que c’était bien de la pâte à modeler qu’il s’agissait.

Comment le traducteur a pu se tromper?  La pâte a en effet une consistance argileuse alors pourquoi pas dire argile à modeler.  Il me semble qu’il s’agit ici d’une surtraduction, on a trop collé au texte de départ sans avoir essayé de trouver l’expression idiomatique en français.

How could the translator have made such an error? The compound is clay- like, so why not call it clay?  This turns out to be a over-translation;  the translator was too influenced by the English and did not take the time to look up the idiomatic French expression.

There is a fine line between translating the message and the form of the message. Here the English word choice “caused” the translator to copy the English structure instead of looking of what the item is called in French.

Il est difficile de surveiller et la forme et le fond d’un texte à traduire. Dans le cas présent, le traducteur s’est laissé influencer par la syntaxe anglaise au lieu de trouver l’équivalent idiomatique français.

Saab - Fire the translator! – Le traducteur . . . .à la porte!

Back in the early 1980’s, when Saab was starting to gain momentum in Canada, the office of the President of GM of Canada asked me to look into a recent customer complaint.  Apparently, the customer had received a fancy, four-colour Saab brochure that contained so many errors that the customer had written : “if the quality of the document resembles in any way the quality of the automobile itself, then I do not want to purchase a Saab”.

Au début des années 1980, lorsque la marque Saab commençait à gagner du terrain au Canada, la présidente de la GM du Canada m’avait demandé d’examiner une plainte provenant d’un client. Apparemment, ce dernier avait reçu une luxueuse brochure quadrichrome qui contenait un grand nombre d’erreurs et à propos de laquelle le client avait écrit : « si la qualité de votre documentation ressemble même de loin à celle de votre voiture, je ne veux pas acheter de Saab. »

General Motors had at that time a pool of seasoned translation companies with whom I worked very closely, as Manager of Linguistic Services.  They had been handpicked because of the expertise of their staff and the reputation they had acquired in the translation field in Canada and the US.  Hardly believing what I was reading in the brochure, I asked them to provide the French they had supplied to Saab, which they immediately did. The job was being monitored from Detroit and Canada but the printing  had been done in Sweden.

La General Motors avait à l’époque une équipe de cabinets de traduction d’expérience avec lesquels je travaillais, en ma capacité de directeur des services linguistiques. Ces entreprises avaient été sélectionnées à cause de l’expertise de leur personnel et de la réputation qu’elles avaient acquise dans le domaine de la traduction au Canada et aux États-Unis. Absolument sidéré parce que je lisais dans la brochure, j’ai demandé au cabinet de me fournir la traduction qu’ils avaient envoyée à Saab, ce qu’il fit immédiatement. Le travail était surveillé à partir de Détroit et du Canada, mais l’impression avait été faite en Suède.

As I started to compare the English final version, the original translation and the French in the brochure,  I realized that alterations had been made to the original English. The English “overseers” had made some final cuts to the copy and changed some portions of it.  The regular procedure would have been to send the amended English original back to the translation house for final changes and approval. However, because of deadline constraints, it appeared that the Swedish printer was instead tasked with the job of touching up the French copy.

Lorsque j’ai commencé à comparer la version définitive anglaise, la traduction d’origine et le français dans la brochure imprimée, je me rendis compte que des modifications avaient été apportées à la version anglaise originale. Les responsables avaient effectué des coupures et des modifications. Dans des circonstances ordinaires, il aurait fallu envoyer le texte anglais modifié au cabinet de traduction pour effectuer les changements et les ajustements. Cependant, à cause du manque de temps, il semble qu’on ait demandé à l’imprimeur suédois d’apporter les changements au texte français.

Asking any printer to work outside of its mother tongue is always hazardous,  and especially risky when it involves as many technical terms as this Saab brochure did. While their fluency in French was questionable, the printer also lacked the technical automotive expertise and advertising experience for the Quebec market.

Demander à un imprimeur de travailler dans une langue autre que sa langue maternelle présente toujours des dangers, surtout s’il s’agit d’un texte technique. L’imprimeur non seulement ne possédait par les connaissances linguistiques nécessaires, mais lui manquaient également les connaissances dans le domaine automobile et celui du marketing dans la province de Québec.

It was indeed a mess.  GM Canada wanted to fire the translation company but I was able to show management what had happened and focus the blame on the administrative decisions, which had been made during the printing of the brochure.

Le travail était bâclé. La GM Canada voulait congédier le cabinet de traduction, mais j’ai réussi à lui montrer ce qui était arrivé et à concentrer ses efforts sur les décisions administratives qui avaient été prises pendant la préparation de cette brochure.

We will never know how many Quebec customers Saab (and GM) lost as a result of releasing such a botched up brochure. After a long history of under-performance, Saab was finally sold by GM in 2010.

Nous ne connaissons pas le nombre de clients que perdit Saab (et GM) à cause de cette brochure bâclée. Après de nombreuses années de résultats minables, GM finit par vendre Saab en 2010.

Proper translation project management would have prevented damaging Saab’s prospective customer relationships, while avoiding the lost time and substantial reprint costs involved.  “Do it right the first time!” has never sounded more appealing.

Une gestion ordonnée de ce projet aurait évité d’endommager les relations établies entre les clients potentiels et Saab et aurait également évité les pertes de temps et d’argent pour la réimpression. On aurait pu « Faire juste du premier coup ».

Dehydrated flakes of parsley – Persil en flocons déshydratés

Typically, the name of a retail product features the main descriptor,  in this case, the word Parsley. Strangely enough, the small jar that we recently  bought at Loblaws’ said

Dehydrated

Parsley Flakes

The French, shown immediately below, said

Persil en flocons

déshydratés

From a graphic, visual point of view, that is fine but from a linguistic one, it is not. You may have noticed that the adjective déshydratés agrees in gender and number with flacons (i.e. flakes). The problem is, it is not the flakes that are dehydrated, it is the parsley.

The resulting French is just as lame sounding as “Dehydrated flakes of Parsley”.

The right French sequence would have been

                                               Persil déshydraté

       en flocons

The symmetry with the English text is down the drain. I can see the reason why many more packages show this type of error. The in-house designer does the English layout and the French is “plugged-in” later, often without any input from a translator.

The consumer is looking for the product but cannot help noticing the “slippage” – this upsets him or her and may lead to avoiding other products of the same brand.

This is what I would call consumer retention in reverse.

Saturn seat belt/Ceinture Saturn

A request arrived to translate a customer recall bulletin warning  Saturn vehicle owners that their seatbelt contained a hidden tag.  In case of an impact in an accident, the belt would stretch (as it should) and reveal a small tag saying: “In case of accident, replace belt”. There were some 300 000 Saturn owners who were going to receive this bulletin.

Une demande nous arrive de traduire un bulletin de rappel destiné aux propriétaires de voitures Saturn au sujet d’une étiquette cachée. En cas d’impact pendant un accident, la ceinture s’allonge (légèrement, comme prévu) et fait sortir une petite étiquette qui dit en anglais  « In case of accident, replace belt ».

Malheureusement, la version française est tout autre. A French version accompanied the English one. Unfortunately, the French read:

 “En cas d’accident, replacer la ceinture”,

which literally meant « put the belt back (where it was) ». This is obviously different from taking the old seatbelt and replacing it with a new one.  Qui veut dire remettre la ceinture à sa place.

The French should have been “En cas d’accident, remplacer la ceinture”. C’est bien du verbe remplacer qu’il s’agissait.

For the lack of one letter, the whole situation became quite embarrassing and quite expensive. Une erreur d’une lettre a provoqué une situation embarrassante et chère à réparer.

Apparently, somebody at the plant had looked up “replace” in the dictionary and taken the first meaning shown, not understanding that an exchange was supposed to take place, not a put back in place action.

Il semblerait que quelqu’un à l’usine américaine s’était servi d’un dictionnaire bilingue et avait pris le premier mot suggéré, ne s’étant pas rendu compte du fait qu’il s’agissait non pas d’une remise en place mais d’un remplacement.

Wanted: Translator with ESP and X-Ray vision/Recherché : traducteur à la perception ultra-sensorielle et doté de rayons X.

You attend a convention. The program is varied and contains presentations, handouts, and fliers. These have been prepared over time and work with each other. Different departments contributed to the effort and when time came to have the material translated, one translation company could not do everything. What do you do – send the translation to several companies, right?

Vous assistez à un congrès. Le programme est varié et comprend des présentations, des dépliants et des papillons. Cette documentation avait été préparée pendant un bon bout de temps et forme un tout. Plusieurs services ont collaboré et au moment de la traduction de la documentation, un cabinet de traduction n’a pas suffi. Que faire – envoyer les textes à traduire à plusieurs cabinets, voilà!

Wrong!  Shortly after the convention, the head manager for the project stomped into my office and asked that I fire the translators. The printers that had been requested to print the English and French material did a cursory check of the French and discovered that there was no consistency between the various components of the convention. Things called “A” here, were called differently elsewhere. Where one concept was explained one way, it was explained in a different way elsewhere.

Mauvaise idée !  Un peu de temps après la fin du congrès, le gestionnaire en charge arrive chez moi en coup de vent et exige que l’on congédie les traducteurs impliqués. L’imprimeur qui avait été chargé d’imprimer le français et l’anglais y avait jeté un coup d’œil rapide et avait découvert que les différentes parties de la documentation ne se tenaient pas. Un programme appelé « A », avait ailleurs été baptisé par un autre nom. Un concept avait été expliqué d’une façon ici et d’une autre façon ailleurs.

The Manager could not understand how these things could have happened when all of these translator companies had been approved and were receiving the same background information from the client.  I asked: did anyone tell company A that it was sharing work with company B?  Did anyone ask that the final output be coordinated?  Did anyone review the finished material? I guess the printer did it, but not because he had been asked to do so.

Le gestionnaire n’arrivait pas à comprendre comment ces choses se sont produites alors qu’il s’était adressé uniquement à des cabinets agréés par l’entreprise et que toutes recevaient de la documentation de notre part. Je lui demandais alors si le cabinet A avait été informé que le travail serait partagé avec le cabinet B ? Si on avait demandé à quelqu’un de coordonner le produit final ? Est-ce qu’une révision du travail fini avait été effectuée ? Seul l’imprimeur avait fait preuve de professionnalisme, mais uniquement de sa propre initiative.

Vancouver XXI Olympics – XXI Jeux Olympiques de Vancouver

La presse a fait écho des problèmes de traduction vers le français – discours d’inauguration parsemés de mots français, etc. Ce n’est pas un problème inusité, surtout à Vancouver.

French translation problems during the opening ceremonies were brought out in the press. The speeches by the VANOC people contained token French words instead of having actual paragraphs or sentences in French.
