Free books obtained from Google play and lost when cell died: Problem solved. / Livres gratuits en provenance de Google Play et disparus lorsque mon cellulaire a rendu l’âme: Solution trouvée.

In the first year of my ownership of a smartphone, I downloaded about 15 free books in English and in French from Google Play. I read a few of them to see how this method worked but the majority was destroyed when my Galaxy failed. Fortunately I had insured the device and was able to get a replacement model. 

Pendant la première année que j’étais propriétaire d’un téléphone intelligent, j’ai téléchargé une quinzaine de livres en Français et en Anglais de Google Play. J’en ai lu plusieurs pour faire plus ample connaissance avec cette nouvelle méthode mais la majorité de ces livres ont été détruits lorsque mon Galaxy a lâché.  Heureusement, j’avais acheté une assurance ce qui me permit de recevoir un téléphone de rechange. 

I recently visited Google Play online and found a complete listing of these books – unfortunately, one can only  read them online. I wonder what can be done to download them a second time? I had really looked forward to finish reading them on my cell.

J’ai récemment visité le site Internet de Google Play et j’ai y trouvé la liste de tous ces livres – malheureusement seulement disponible en lecture en ligne. Je me demande donc quelles mesures prendre pour les télécharger une seconde fois? J’espérais vraiment en finir la lecture sur mon celullaire.

Realised I had not downloaded again the Google Books app on my new cell. When I finally did, I was asked whether I wanted to sync with Google Play. I said yes and all the missing books appeared!

Je me suis rendu compte que je n'avais pas téléchargé l'application Google Books sur mon nouvel appareil. Une fois cela fait, une question apparût: "voulez-vous vous synchroniser avec Google Play?" J'ai dit oui et voila que tous mes livres perdus sont revenus!

Silent helpers / Aides silencieuses

The professional translator may be compared to a walking encyclopedia but electronic helpers are available too, to work in the background. The one I use is a spellchecker + called Antidote, by the Montreal company Druide. In addition to checking spelling, it can also look for unappropriate  regionalisms used in France, Belgium, Switzerland and other countries. A company doing business in several of these countries would be well advised to avoid words or expressions, which could be offensive or misunderstood.

Le traducteur de métier peut être comparé à une encyclopédie ambulante mais il existe des aides électroniques qui travaillent dans l’arrière-plan. Celui dont je me sers, Antidote, est plus qu’un correcteur d’orthographe, est proposé par Druide, une entreprise de Montréal. En plus des fautes d’orthographe, ce logiciel peut également détecter les régionalismes mal placés pour la France, la Belgique, la Suisse et d’autres pays. Une entreprise qui fait affaire dans ces pays aurait intérêt à éviter ces mots ou expressions, qui pourraient être insultants ou être mal compris.

Register, i.e.the level of language (from high, to common, to slang) used in a communication , is very important in French. Antidote will flag words or expressions which are either too low or too high on the register scale. The translator can set his own or his client’s preferences.

Punctuation is not standard across the various French’s out there. Again, Antidote will signal when a sign is used that is not recognized or used differently in the target country.

Le registre, c’est-à-dire le ton utilisé (soutenu, familier ou argotique), utilisé dans une communication, est extrêmement important en français. Le logiciel Antidote signale les mots ou les expressions qui sont d’un registre trop bas ou trop élevé. Le traducteur peut régler le registre exigé par le client. La ponctuation n’est pas uniforme dans la Francophonie. De nouveau, Antidote va nous signaler lorsqu’un signe n’est pas reconnu dans le pays cible ou est utilisé d’une façon différente.

Finally, the software will flag sound alikes and spell alikes to help the translator avoid out of place words.

As can be seen, translation is done on several levels and like an orchestra conductor, the translator must make sure that all the levels are addressed and expressed. Have you asked you translator about his detective work?

Finalement, le logiciel va alerter le traducteur aux faux amis (anglicismes) et aux confusions lexicales.

On remarque donc que la traduction se fait sur plusieurs niveaux et, tel qu’un chef d’orchestre, le traducteur doit s’assurer que tous les niveaux sont respectés et sont exprimés. Avez-vous demandé à votre traducteur s’il a fait son travail de détective ? 

Dragon – Writing an article on the dictaphone! Création d’un article au Dictaphone

I have recently been asked to write a short  article for a professional publication.  I knew what I wanted to say so it was just a matter of putting it down on paper. That done, I wanted to hear it read and remembered that my Dragon Voice Recognition software has a text-to-speech feature.  So I opened the appropriate boxes and found the option for that function.  Cut & paste and I was listening to my article being read in English by an artificial voice!

L’article que je viens de composer pour une publication professionnelle était en anglais et je voulais voir quelle impression il donnait. Je me suis souvenu que le logiciel Dragon a également une fonction de synthèse vocale. Il suffit de copier-coller le texte dans une case appropriée et la machine vous donne la lecture de l’article par une voix artificielle.

Encouragé par ce succès, j’ai décidé de dicter une version française du même article. J’ai tout simplement modifié la langue dans Dragon (il y a un grand choix de langues dans chaque logiciel ) et j’ai commencé à dicter en français. Formidable, le français s’affiche à mesure que je dicte. J’ai dû revenir à quelques reprises pour faire des petites corrections, mais c’est surtout parce que je ne maîtrise pas encore la dictée à 100 pour cent.

Emboldened by the English results, I decided to create a translation of the same article but in French this time. In the same Dragon software, I selected French this time and just “talked” the translation through.  It was amazingly easy and only a few corrections were required because I am not quite used to the software yet. I can also select the text-to-speech feature and have the computer read the article back to me in French.

As with any tool, practice makes perfect and I intend to use dictation more often, both in English and in French. Comme pour tout nouvel outil, il suffit de s’en servir suffisamment pour l’apprivoiser.

ADVENTURES IN BELL LAND- - AVENTURES AU PAYS DE BELL

Like many other Internet users in Canada, I have been using Bell Canada for many years.Le modem fourni par Bell et le router d’IBM que nous avions installé marchaient comme merveille.

At the beginning of July, the Internet connection started to act up – sporadic misconnects, lost emails. I called Technical Service and upon having explained all our trouble-shooting steps we had taken, was told that the matter had to do with a DNS – people felt frustrated but could not help.

Au milieu du mois, la situation s’est empirée. Le nombre sites Internet captés se réduit à trois ou quatre, et le courriel ne marche que sporadiquement. On nous envoie un technicien qui nous apprend que notre modem (de Bell) n’est plus capable de transmettre la masse de données que les câbles lui envoient mais également qu’il y a un problème de câble dans la rue.

A few days later, visit from the Bell Cable person who performs a small cable splice on the front lawn but who also tells us that the problem is inside, not in the cable. Third technician, who attempts to install a brand-new modem-router, discovers that it is defective. Bell sends us a second modem-router which their own Testing facility finds to be defective. Third router arrives and after days of fighting with it, we finally make it work. It appears as though not sufficient installation info was provided by Bell but we were able to find similar info from the manufacturer, 2-Wire.

Our internet connection is now ok again and Bell is reimbursing us for over a month of lost use. L’Internet est plein de forums qui discutent des difficultés rencontrées par les utilisateurs de cet appareil – donc nous ne sommes par les premiers. Nous nous considérons chanceux, au moins, la liaison est rétablie.
